Miniature painting in grisaille

This grisaille miniature on ivory is signed by Piat-Joseph Sauvage (1744-1818), an artist renowned for his trompe-l'œil portraits imitating bas-relief. Piat-Joseph Sauvage was a painter of Flemish origin, famous for his miniatures and decorative paintings imitating stone or bronze. The work depicts a profile portrait of a man wearing a wig with a ponytail and a costume typical of the late 18th century. Technique: This is a grisaille miniature on an ivory support, housed in a finely chased oval bronze or brass medallion frame. Although the subject is not explicitly named on the work, its physiognomy and the style of the portrait bear striking similarities to historical figures of the revolutionary era, such as: Maximilien Robespierre: Similar profile portraits of Robespierre dating from 1790–1797 exist in French national collections. Jean-Baptiste Fleuriot-Lescot: An anonymous portrait from 1790, held at the Musée Carnavalet, displays comparable features. Jean-Marie-Joseph Ingres: The father of the famous painter was also depicted in this profile style at the end of the 18th century. Comparable works by Piat-Joseph Sauvage, including portraits of the royal family and allegories, regularly appear on the antiques market.

Flamenco Dancer with White Dog

This mixed technique with tempera on canvas is very characteristic of the Belgian school of the 1920s-1930s. This high-quality work reminds us of that of Anto Carte and Van de Woestijne. Émile Gastemans (Borgerhout 1883-1956) was a student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and a self-taught artist. He led the famous artistic group 'Als ik kan'. His work, in broken tones, possesses a muted harmony and a monumental drawing, according to Bénézit. It is more than likely one of the major works of the artist who adored this tempera technique (watercolor, charcoal, oil on palette, and gouache that characterizes him so well).
